Round B Cloggers, if you're not sure what you'd like to post on, consider the following:

Hester Prynne is shunned by members of her society for her "scandalous" behavior. Does this still happen to people in our (modern) world? In what ways are our society's responses to scandal similar to those of Hester's society? In what ways are they different? And do you think there women are judged more harshly than men in our society? Explain and give examples.

  1. When people commit acts of adultery, they are looked down upon in our society today. Our society's responses to scandal are similar to those of Hester's society in that one's reputation is ruined and people now have different opinions about that person. People will think the person is bad and might even stop talking to them. Although there are similarities between our society's responses and those of Hester's society, Hester was much more punished for her actions than women in our society. Her punishments are more extreme than of the punishments in our society.
I do think that women are judged more harshly than men in our society. If a woman sleeps around a lot, she will be looked down upon whereas a man will get the respect of other men. A simple explanation for a man sleeping around will be that he is just being a guy however it is harder for people to see the reasons why women would have the same behavior. I think that it is very unfair how our society judges people and their behaviors based on gender.

  3. Adultery and other forms of scandalous behavior are still frowned upon, but it is very different in today's society than in the Puritan society. For one thing, there is not anywhere near the amount of sexism in today's culture than in the Puritan society. While there is possibly a minor amount of sexism in today's culture, where some would still be more disgusted by a woman committing adultery than a man, when a man commits adultery, the question of "why do men always cheat?" is asked, even though the reasons may be different. But in the Scarlet Letter, Hester is the one who is shunned and forced to where the scarlet A simply because she is a woman.

  4. Adultery is still looked down on in today's society, but was punished much harsher in Puritan Society. In today's society adultery usually leads to a divorce and past that it is mostly just thought of as a bad decision. In Puritan Society, in Hester's situation, she is marked by the Scarlet Letter. In today's society women are still judged differently than men. On the notion of "loose behavior" most women who sleep around are marked as sluts while men who sleep around are not marked with the same title.

  5. Andrew for the most part I agree with your idea that adultery was punished in a much harsher manner. However, I think it is important to recognize how little our societies perception of morality has changed. In our society today the punishment itself may be looser than the Puritan castigation of Hester but the idea of looking down upon those who stray from the normal path of society is still definitely immanent.

  6. I would think that in today's society "scandalous" behavior is still perceived as bad, but I would say not as harshly. I would say that we do not ostracize the adulteress as much the Puritan society but they still serve as examples to rest of society. By observing others misfortunes to we can guide ourselves away from their problems. I would disagree with Yani's opinion that women are judged more because I think even though some women are treated like their husbands property our society is transitioning for more gender equality and women are free to make the same mistakes as men. I think that they opinions, that we hold now in high school about the “promiscuous” activity of our same sex peers change, as we grow older. Currently girls regard other girls who sleep around, as sluts, but guys regard guys who take the same action with a great amount of respect. As we grow up, or as I have observed, cheating, and looseness is regarded with the same amount of distaste for both sexes.
