Modernism

As we move from Realism to Modernism, we note a shift in an author or artists's perception. In Realism, many believed that there was only one truth or interpretation of reality. In the Modernism era, the author created their own truth through the multiple realities of everyone. Which era would you prefer to illustrate/write? Which theory of truth do you agree with? Why?

  1. If I had to illustrate and/or artistically represent one era I would probably choose Realism because it is easier for me to paint or draw what I know. Some of the modernistic ways such as cubism are harder for me to handle as an artist. However, if I were to write about one I would probably choose Modernism because I think it is interesting to consider everyones perspectives. I feel that it is better to be able to look at situations through others eyes or perspective. It not only helps you grow but might alter your opinions on some things.

  2. I "agree" more with Modernism and its theory of perceiving "reality" because it accepts that everyone views the world differently and that multiple realities exist. The realists thought they were portraying reality as truthfully as possible, but really they were only writing about their own personal viewpoint on reality. They were trusting that they perceived the world the same as everybody else and therefore their vision was the only true reality. The modernists were more open to the fact that reality differs and although it was harder to come up with a concrete definition for reality ,in order to portray it accurately they consulted different opinions to form it.

  3. I would choose realism because I am not very artistic so it would be easier for me to just paint what I see. I also agree more with realism because I don't have enough imagination to interpret something I see in another way than the most logical way.

  4. I think that realism would be easier to write about because the writer gets to write about their own ideas and view of the world. However I think modernism is more interesting because you get more then one view about the same thing. It is very interesting to see the many different ways that people can view the same thing. Realism does not try to see more then one view so it may be easier to write or draw but it does not teach you as much about the world or the people in it. So though it may not be as simple I would prefer modernism because it is more complex.

  5. I also think realism would be easier to write because I can convey exactly what I see. I can faithfully translate what I am thinking to the viewer. I think it would be easier to be truthful to the reader and show it how it is. Whereas, modernism writers, write so people can use there own perception of reality to interpret what they read. This would be harder because as a wrtier they would have to come up with a way to show imperfections in the main character.

  6. I agree that realism would be easier to write and that is the style I would write in. It would be easier because there are guidelines to follow and a specific format in which the writing is followed. Since the style is fairly straight forward I would find it easier to use and I believe that I would be able to get my points and thoughts through more directly and clearly when writing in a realism style. Modernism would be far too difficult because you would have to start from scratch each time and it would be very difficult and much harder to use modernism instead of realism. I feel that with realism I could get my point across with greater detail and just better than moderism.

  7. I believe that following a more realist perception of the world would allow one to create art or literature much more easily, because they would be basing it on their own knowledge, senses, and viewpoints. This would be simpler than attempting to take the views and perceptions of others into account, as in modernism. However, I think that a modernistic approach to art or literature would make it more easily understood by people who don't share the same thoughts and views as the works creator.

  8. I prefer to write and illustrate with the values of the Modernist era. Modernist such as Ezra Pound believed that in writing you should always continue to experiment and when experimenting it is okay to value the imperfections that your writing might bring to the table. I think that by valuing imperfections it can make a person grow and help understand different people and there values. Understanding people is about how we perceive them. I happen to find modernist perceptions easier to write and also illustrate.

  9. i definetely prefer a more modernist perspective on writing. i like the idea that there is more than one reality or interpretation to any situation. because everyone perceives things differently, i believe that poetry should not portray just one truth. i also like how modernists are very careful to not make any writing 'too perfect.' instead they make sure their poems have flaws. showing imperfection makes them seem more human and relatable in my opinion
