the angel's message

After reading the passage with the angel, what do you think the message that the angel wants to give to Prior or that the angel wants prior to give to others is?

  1. After class i think that the Angel is trying to make Prior act as a prophet and spread the word that humans should be content with where they are and not work towards progress or change. The angel does this because she wants God to come back to the Angels, showing that she is a very selfish character who represents a selfish society that is not happy with social change.

  2. The angel thinks that Prior is a prophet and the angel needs his help. The angel tells Prior that god has become bored with heaven and the angels because humans are much more interesting. The angel says "you think and you imagine! Migrate and explore... he began to leave us! bored with his angels" (176). Humans are constantly moving forward and inventing more thing and god finds that more interesting then the angels. The angel tells prior to tell people to stop moving forward so that humans will become boring again. The angel hopes that if people become boring then god will be more interested in the angels again. The angel in selfish and is only using Prior as a way to gain things for herself, the angel in not what you would think of as a typical angel because she is using prior to benefit herself.

  3. The Angel wants Prior to accept and spread the teachings of "the Book of the Anti-Migratory Epistle". She wants Prior to somehow help her stop the movement and progression of the human race by becoming the Prophet who teaches these ideas. The Angel really doesn't care about the humans at all, and I think that's part of why Prior is so scared of her. He doesn't want to teach the Angel's ideas but he is so scared of her power that he doesn't know what to do and he feels like he is going insane.

  4. I think the Angel wants Prior to help her be a part of God again. The Angel is very jealous of humans because they are always moving forward and progressing, and that is what God is interested in. He is not interested in the Angel's way of life anymore. God is more focused on the diversity, travel, sexuality, and love developing between humans and this makes the Angel unhappy that his attention is not on her. She visits Prior to selfishly get humans to stop progressing and receiving all of God's attention. The Angel isn't visiting Prior to protect or benefit humans; she is doing it for her own selfish reasons. The Angel wants Prior to relay this message to the other humans, so they get scared and stop moving forward.

  5. I think that the angle wants Prior to act as a prophet because she is jealous of the humans for being able to "create" and move forward with their lives and she is not. It is suggested that the angle is jealous of the humans because god as shifted his attention from the angles to the humans because the humans are more interesting. With that said the Angle wants prior to be the prophet because that means his job is to encourage other humans to not move forward. If Prior did this the Angles' hope is that God would return his attention to the Angles instead of the humans.

  6. I think the angel is trying to tell Prior that humans should be content with their lives and not try to progress and change. Also, the angel is jealous of the humans becasue God is now focused on the humans instead of the angels. The angel is very selfish becasue she does not want the humans to progess and move forward.

  7. The Angel wants Prior to stop the migration and progression of the human race purely for her own benefits. Since the humans have been developing and growing as a whole God has deserted the angels, and they are trying to get him back. So, the Angel uses her power to overwhelm Prior and convince him to become the Prophet of this message. She wants him to spread this idea to the rest of humankind so that in time God will become bored with them and return to the angels.

  8. I think that the angel represents the majority of society at the time that associated AIDS with gays, had misconceptions about them, and was generally homophobic. The public used to (and some still do) refuse to acknowledge homosexuality, and see it as a problem that can be "fixed" or made to go away. I think that the angel is comparable to this side of society because it asks Prior to essentially shut up and be normal. It wants him to stop progressing, and stop being interesting so that God forgets the humans and returns to the angels. This could represent certain parts of society trying to stop the gay rights movement from gaining momentum, and being more widely accepted and acknowledged..
