Captain Delano

I know we have talked about this in class a little, it think it may be useful consolidate our opinions. What do you think about Captain Delano? Do you like his character?

  1. I think Captain Delano is a good-natured person but is a little ignorant to reality. He tries to ignore all the clues that would have told him that something was wrong on the ship. He already has ideas of what is going on when he gets on the boat. He does not keep a open mind and misses what is actually happening. I don't really like his character because he misses something that is happening right in front of him.

  2. I agree with Merritt that Captain Delano is a good-natured person but he doesn't see the obvious. Maybe this is because he is so good-natured that he thinks that it can't possibly be true. But with all the clues that were given to him by the sails men and the odd actions of the slaves, you think he'd be able to figure it out. I also don't really like his character because he cannot realize the obvious.

  3. I don't like Captain Delano because, as Merritt and Ryan said, he doesn't realize what is happening even if there are clear signs evidencing the fact that there is something weird happening on the ship. I also dislike him because of his racist view: he is defined as a good-natured person, compassionate and charitable but he compares black people to dogs!

  4. I agree the most with Vale. I'm not a fan of Captain Delano. Even though he means well in what he does, he is too blind to what is really going on. It's kinda obvious( at least to us readers) what has happened, and for him not to pick up on it really annoys me. It's pretty obvious that Benito was acting really strange because he was nervous, nit just impolite.I understand that Melville wrote Delano to be this way for a reason, but I just don't like it. His racist comments and thoughts don't make him any more likable either.
