Influence of Age of Innocence

Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton is one of the highliest-regarded books in history. Her unique writing style pioneered and explored new possibilities of futuristic literature. That being said, in what ways has Age of Innocence influenced modern writing?

  1. One of the things I first noticed about Age of Innocence was Wharton's use of sarcasm. I think that today, sarcasm and sarcastic humor are used heavily, in writing, tv shows, etc. Wharton tried a different way of critiquing aspects of culture, a more subtle and funny way, and I think that tone has definitely reverberated in modern writing.

  2. I second the sarcasm. It definitely has inflitrated our modern society. I think she also explored a new type of conflict and presenting it to the reader more subtly.

  3. I agree with both of these, but I think the sarcasm has had more of an affect than the subtleness. In modern works, we are still told things more than we are shown things, like Wharton does.
