American Literature CLOG: Crèvecoeur vs. Winthrop

American Literature CLOG: Crèvecoeur vs. Winthrop: Crèvecoeur and Winthrop clearly have very different views of the New World, and of what distinguishes it from Europe. However, in my opinion Crevecouer is looking for opportunities for the settlers in the new country. He also describes that America is an melting pot of people who came from Europe and Africa etc. Futhermore his vision is closer to the way the Americans think of themselves now because America have a lot of people from all over the world and it began in the 17th century when English, Dutch, Spanisch, German, Swedish,...people came abroad to feel as freemen and get a uncomplicated lifestyle.

  1. i also agree with pia! Winthrop says that we must think of America as a place to worship God. Although Winthrop was a little extrme in the way he thought prosperity was being prosperous with God. Unlike Winthrop, Crevecoeur tells people there are new experinces and oppertunies in the new world. So like Pia said, i think Crevecoeur's ideas are more like today's world than Wintrops world.

  2. I agree with Caroline and Pia in that Crevecoeur is more like our world today because he isn't just all nuts about god like winthrop and finds it acceptable to move on and have new ideas and views on things and expand on ideas in the world that would be different than the norm. crevecoeur is definitely more like us today than winthrop because we don't live in a super strict world totally based on religion and being like perfect in your religion and like everything having to do with like praising god

  3. I agree with john. i think that the reason that crevecoeur's ideas are so much more modern than winthrop is because of winthrop's influence by religion. Crevecoeur seems to be more open to the world and accepting of religious and cultural diversity, whereas Winthrop writes about being a good christian and how to apply that to everyday life in the New World

  4. Keep in mind that Crevecoeur also wrote his ideas nearly 150 years after Winthrop. America changed greatly during this time, not everyone coming over from Europe was doing so for the freedom the new world offered. Many were making the journey just to start a new life. Some were paid to travel to the new world. Compared with Winthrop's time, the motivation to travel to the new world wasn't strongly based on religion anymore. This is more similar to America today, and may be why we believe Creveceour's ideas of Americans are so much closer to our own. His writings were based in a time after this change had happened.
