John Winthrop

Yesterday in class we dissussed about John Winthrop's, "Modell of Christian Charity", and i was thinking are there any similarites and/or differences between his work and the early american poams we read? I found that in "The Author to Her Book", the author did not mention the the Christan God whish I thought was unusal becuase it was a puritain author. Did you guys find any differences and/or similarites??

  1. i mean, i think that winthrop and the poetry are very different because of the fact that one is a scripture on how to be a good christian and the rest is poetry. but i think that the content of the poetry we have read and Winthrop's writing is very similar. its about how to be a good christian, and i think in the poetry you can see winthrops ideas being put into action

  2. I do think Winthrop's "Modell of Christian Charity" reflects the early American poems that we read. Through Anne Bradstreet's poem of her burning house, she realized through Puritan beliefs that everything was already predestined for her. In Winthrop's essay, he discussed that his city on top of the hill would be a model for all, and practice Puritan beliefs.

    Caroline,
Even though Anne did not mention G-d in her "The Author to Her Book" poem, she really focuses in on the Christian G-d in her other poem. Her initial reaction to her burning house was not, but after a while she thought that G-d would save her and point her in the direction in which she was destined for.
