Death of a Salesman
From are reading for last night, we saw that when Willy was offered a job, he would always turn offer down. Why would he do something like this when he is constantly asking for money to help pay his bills?
I think that he is doing that because he doesn't want to disappoint the people around him and especially his family. To accept the new job would mean that he would have had to reveal that he earlier had been fired, thing that in my opinion he won't reveal to his family. He will rather make something up to cover up what happened.
I agree with Vale. Willy always thinks only about the things that he could never be and had never accomplished, but he wants to look perfect in everyone´s eyes therefore he keeps lying to everybody. To take a new job would be too much of a risk that someone would find out that he got fired. However, I think that his pride and male´s ego didn´t let him to take the job from Charlie. As Charlie says in the story, Willy always envied him and that´s why he wouldn´t take the job even if he really needed one.
I kinda agree with Kristina. He has a high self-esteem. He wants to be accepted as a eligible person who makes tons of money. His constant failure forced him to tell lies to himself and his families. His vanity gets in the way to accept reality -- that is he sucks at selling. Therefore he won't accept the offers
I think that Willy doesn't want to feel like he owes Charley anything because, exactly what Kristina said, his ego gets in the way. He clearly needs the money but I think part of his dream is to make it on his own so he can say he did, he made the money, he's supporting his family. Willy wants to be well known and I believe that is another reason he doesn't except the job; that is to say he doesn't feel like he can't do that by excepting a job from someone else.
