I think Melville put it there simply to give the reader the background information about what had happened before Captain Delano got on the boat, as well as show the difference between Captain Delano's view on the situation versus reality.
I think the reasoning behind Melville adding it was to make us readers see the irony in what happened, and (as Ryan said) to give us background info as to what happened before Delano finds the San Dominik. I think Melville wants us to use it as a tool to look back at the story to see really how foolish Delano was for not picking up on the slave revolt before it happened again.
I think that Melville wrote it, as Ryan and Katie said, to give the background informations and to explain all the weird things happened during the story that brought the reader, but not Delano, to think that the blacks had a revolt. I also think that it gives more reality to the story and it gives more details about how the black people were seen by the whites. In fact they are described as cruel, ferocious and pitiless without never questioning about the reasons of their rebellion and how the whites treated them before.
