In chapter 10, we learn that Milkman decides to head to Pennsylvania to go look for the gold that was supposedly left in the cave. His intentions on his journey seem to change from greed of gold to self-understanding and his family history when he talks with Circe. Why do you think this intentions changed so quickly and what do you think he will do in order to better understand himself and figure out his family's history?
I think Milkman's motives changed when he learned more about his fathers life. He understood that Macon Jr. actually had a close relationship with Macon. He learns more about where he is from and what got his family to where it is today. I think in order to understand himself better he will pursue learning about the different stories that he has been told throughout the beginning of the book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Merritt about him pursuing the truth within the stories that he was told. I think that Milkman realizes there might be truth behind the stories he was told, and thus, he pursues the gold in hopes of finding any sort of story that he can conjure up enough courage to believe. Also, I'm not sure why but I have a feeling that he'll encounter someone who tells him the same story from a different point of view, he'll choose to believe it, and as a result he'll do something stupid to the person made out to be the antagonist in said story. He'll make the wrong choice yet again and it will affect the people around him yet again. I'm not sure why, but that just feels to me like something that he would do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you guys. I that Milkman changes his mind after he hears the story about his father and his relationship with Macon I. He embarks on the journey with an intention to find the gold and maybe finally find himself, but when people start telling him the stories from his ancestors' past, he starts to realize that he misses these things. He starts to realize that he doesn't have that keen memories of his father as Macon has of his own father. He starts to realize that if he wants to have any good memories in his past he has to do something for it. That's when his journey to find gold changes into a journey of seeking the mysteries of his past. I think that after hearing those stories he will finally be able to move from his past to the future and finally grow up.
