Why are they back?

Now that we have read the last act of the play, what do you think the purpose of Act 5 Scene 6 is? This is the passage with Sarah Ironson and Rabbi Chemelwitz. Why are these characters back? What are they trying to say about why people in heaven play cards? What was Kushner's motive for that scene?

  1. I think that the reason that everyone plays cards in heaven is because in heaven, where almost all certainties are known, cards allow people to do something without already knowing the outcome. I think that this scene supports the novel's idea that one cannot wait to find a theory before making a change in their life. Kushner's motive in this scene was to support this idea.
